A considerable force can be resisted by friction with no apparent motion. Thus, when you push to get an object moving (in this case, a crate), you must raise the object until it can skip along with just the tips of the surface hitting, breaking off the points, or both. Close-up inspection of these surfaces shows them to be rough. (Figure) is a crude pictorial representation of how friction occurs at the interface between two objects. ![]() Furthermore, if you oiled the concrete you would find it easier to get the crate started and keep it going (as you might expect). If you add mass to the crate, say by placing a box on top of it, you need to push even harder to get it started and also to keep it moving. Once in motion, it is easier to keep it in motion than it was to get it started, indicating that the kinetic frictional force is less than the static frictional force. Now static friction gives way to kinetic friction. If you finally push hard enough, the crate seems to slip suddenly and starts to move. This means that the static friction responds to what you do-it increases to be equal to and in the opposite direction of your push. Imagine, for example, trying to slide a heavy crate across a concrete floor-you might push very hard on the crate and not move it at all. If two systems are in contact and moving relative to one another, then the friction between them is called kinetic friction. If two systems are in contact and stationary relative to one another, then the friction between them is called static friction. ![]() ![]() ![]() However, Koder is not yet Retina optimized and so the text is like ouch on my eyes.ĭisclaimer: Textastic has previously been a sponsor of the RSS feed. Working Copy was the best Git client and it works well with Textastic. It has an option to use Inconsolata, which I love it has great syntax highlighting and it was just updated for the Retina screen. As far as the editor goes, Textastic is the best IDE I've used (for iPhone & iPad), but my workflow was still considerably slower than on a Macbook or iMac. However, Textastic’s approach seems to make more sense for an iPad editor because it’s easier to make syntax mistakes and you generally code a bit slower on an iPad (especially if you’re using the on-screen keyboard). In Coda, you’re basically working with the live file, and when you save it, you’re saving it to the server. With Textastic you pick a file or folder on your server you want to work with, download it to your iPad, work with the local copy, feel free to save it, and if/when you’re ready to upload it you chose to upload. ![]() ![]() 3 Interestingly, the thumb bone from Orrorin tugenesis-an incomplete collection of human-like bones and teeth that evolutionists date at 5.7 to 6.1 million years-does have these typically human curves. Australopithecines also lack these grip-enhancing contours. They can only manipulate small objects by gripping them between the thumb and index finger tip-to-tip or pad-to-side, a pad-to-pad grip being impossible for them. Living great apes like chimpanzees and gorillas do not have these bony contours. Image by Sergio Almécija, Salvador Moyà-Solà, and David Alba, via PLoS ONE. And beyond that is another more shallow depression (in blue) for the soft tissue of the thumb’s tip ( distal ungula pulp), which being smaller and less mobile is able to securely grasp a tiny object. Just beyond this tendon’s insertion, an especially large depression (in green) accommodates the bulky soft tissue of the thumb pad ( proximal ungual pulp), which is soft and mobile enough to adapt to the shape of an object being grasped. As shown above, the tendon (shown in red) that enables you to freely flex the end of your thumb is accommodated by a particularly large depression (in orange, proximopalmar fossa). Each curve in the contour of the bone at the end of the thumb ( pollical distal phalanx) enhances the human ability to feel and grip tiny objects gingerly but securely. ![]() Your human ability to nimbly hold and manipulate objects between your thumb and any one of your fingers depends on more than the ideally designed proportions of your thumb, finger, and hand bones. Almécija’s analysis of primate thumb-and-finger proportions published in Nature Communications overturns the view that we humans evolved our hands from chimp-like ancestors in favor of the notion that chimps evolved their hands from hands like ours. Such manual dexterity presumably gave our ancestors something to think about and made the manufacture of tools move past the fashioning of stone axes so they could adapt and evolve to hoist themselves into the modern world. “Chimpanzees have actually evolved more than humans.” 1Įvolutionary wisdom holds that humans developed big brains and creative powers after coming down from the trees and evolving hands capable of manipulating the world around them. “Human hands have not changed that much since they diverged from chimpanzees,” Almécija says. They believe the human hand’s precision grip is not advanced but instead represents the primitive condition much like that of the last common ancestor shared with apes. They are challenging the view that humans diverged from chimp-like ancestors with hands adapted to swing from tree limbs. Evolutionary researcher Sergio Almécija and colleagues have knocked the pins from under that bit of conventional evolutionary thinking. Thumbing through the pages of most manuals on human evolutionary history, a reader would soon latch onto the idea that our precision grip was a relatively recent addition to the human repertoire. But to put it simply, the higher the Flesch Reading Score, the easier it is to read. The test uses a formula to assign a score to a particular text depending on the number of words, sentences, and syllables in your work. The Flesch Reading Ease is just the tool to help you determine that. Another thing that could affect reading time is readability. Having this feature will help save you time while still constructing your speech so you can cut or add accordingly. This is an especially nice feature to have when writing a speech since you often can’t tell how long it already is until you practice reciting it out loud. As you can probably tell, the reading time will give you an estimate of how long it would take for an average person to read through the text. The first line is labeled Flesch Reading Score, while the second is labeled Reading time. Now, looking at the bottom part, you will see two lines right below the text box. Flesch Reading Score And Text Readability And of course, you can adjust accordingly to better optimize your work. This way, you can determine whether your use of keywords in the article was overkill or not enough. It’ll show you how many times you’ve mentioned certain keywords in your text. Now, why do you even need to know this data? Well, aside from telling you what words you commonly use in your writing style, it can also be helpful for SEO purposes. ![]() The Word Frequency Counter basically lists down all the words used in the text and counts how many times they appeared and what percent of the text they comprise. This incorporates a fun little way of playing around with data. Moving to the right of the text box, you will see the Word Frequency Counter. How it works is that it will identify a chunk of text as a paragraph through the presence of breaks in between texts. Lastly, you will find the paragraph count. Additionally, if no end punctuation is present in the entire text, the counter will display a count of one instead of zero in the sentence counter. It will consider the heading and the first line for that section as one sentence. So if let’s say, you copy and paste an article with all the headings present, the site will not count those as sentences. Now, you should note that the sentence counter determines a sentence by the presence of an end punctuation. To the right of that, you will have the sentence count. The next two boxes feature the text’s character count, one putting into account spaces and the other without. ![]() As you’d probably expect, the first box will show you the word count for the text pasted. Counters On Word Count ToolĪbove the tabs, you can see five boxes with their respective labels. Lastly, there’s the clear tab that allows you to erase the entire text box and start with a fresh, blank one. There’s also another option that makes the text into a title. But you can also change the text to all lower case and all upper case. The default setting is sentence form wherein the start of each sentence is in uppercase. The third tab, labeled Case, allows you to alter the letter case of the text. Now, these two, so far, are pretty basic, and you can find them in most word processors. The font sizes available for use are in the range of 10 to 14. From the name alone, you can already guess what that tab does. The first tab will allow you to choose from a variety of fonts. Right above the text box, you will see four tabs. This is where you’ll be placing your text. Once you’re on the homepage, you will immediately see the text box in the middle of the page.
